Traveling to Sicily, Italy from Germany

In the end of September 2021, my boyfriend and I were in Sicily island in Italy for a week.
We flew from BER airport in Berlin, Germany to Palermo airport in Sicily, Italy.
It took around two and an half hours.
BER airport is a new airport in Germany.
There are a lot of parking buildings therefore it took some time to park and find a car but anyway, we could make it.

The reason we decided to go to Sicily for vacation, that’s because I wanted to enjoy swimming and eating Italian food.
Plus, my boyfriend hasn’t been to Sicily yet either so he agreed to go there.

The temperature in the end of September in Sicily was maximum around 30 degrees and minimum around 22 degrees.
That’s a beautiful temperature, additionally it was not too crowded.

I would like to recommend beaches, restaurants and sightseeing places that we visited in Sicily as below.

1.Mondello

From Palermo airport to Mondello by taxi takes around 25 mins and it costs 30 to 45.
We were staying at a room by air bnb in Mondello.
It costs around 50 euro per night.
You can go to Mondello beach in 5 minutes by foot.
There were many people on the beach on weekends but during weekdays were comfortable.

Water was calm and clear.
Therefore Mondello beach is good for families.
Water temperature was around 25 degrees.
It is not so warm but if the temperature is around 30, then it’s comfortable in water.
Also, there are a lot of restaurants near Mondello beach.
I would like to recommend 3 restaurants in Mondello.

Restaurant Info

Poldo 2 Mondello

Address: Via Torre di Mondello, 22/C, 90151 Palermo PA, Italy
Terrace table on the second floor was nice.

L’angolo di Mondello Trattoria da Franco

Address: Via Mondello, 15, 90151 Palermo PA, Italy
The lady working at restaurant gave me Sicily magnet souvenir.

Alle Terrazze

Address: Viale Regina Elena, 90149 Palermo PA, Italy
Nice view, nice service.
The restaurant looks like a castle and fancy.

I thought Sicily is not so expensive to eat at restaurants but it costs more than I expected.
One plate of pasta costs around 20 euro.
It depends how much and what kind of fish you eat but it costs around 25 to 45 for a meal.
People who worked at the restaurant were not so friendly than other cities I visited in Italy.
Pasta I had was a little too salty and oily for me.
But seafood, especially shell e.g. clam was tasty.

2.Erice

Erice is worth visiting if the weather is sunny, otherwise it’s difficult to see a nice view from top of the mountain.
When we visited there, it was too foggy there.
Sadly, we couldn’t see the nice view we were supposed to see.
Driving on the road in the mountain was not so comfortable because the road was quite narrow and there were a lot of sharp curves on the way.
Even though the weather is not good, the atmosphere in Erice is nice.
There are a lot of cute narrow streets and old buildings which are typical Italian buildings to me.

I bought salt in Erice as a souvenir for my sister.
I recommend going to Erice in the morning or afternoon.
Around 15:00, restaurants are not open.
When I had a stomach problem, I borrowed the restroom at a restaurant.
People who worked in a restaurant were kind.

There is a nice view the way back to Mondello from Erice.

3.San vito lo capo

It takes around 2 hours from Mondello to San vito lo capo by car.
Some friends of my boyfriend have been to San vito lo capo and they said that the beach is great.
That’s why we definitely wanted to visit there.

Water is clean and the beach is huge.
Waves are strong compared to Mondello beach.
On weekdays, there are not many people at the beach San vito lo capo in the end of September.
My boyfriend and I were glad that we could totally relax on the beach.
Water temperature was around 25 degrees, I guess.
After 16:00, it’s getting windy.
If you want to enjoy the water, I recommend going to San vito lo capo beach before afternoon.

4.Cefalu

Cefalu is one of my favorite places in Sicily, Italy.
You can see nice views of cute buildings in Cefalu beach.
There is a small city near the beach.
There are restaurants, cafes, churches and souvenir shops.
There is also an old washing place called “Lavatoio Medievale Fiume Cefalino”.

We found a nice spot to take a picture.

There were a couple sitting there the whole time though.

Here is a cute astray.
Many of them are randomly set on the wall.

Beach additional info
To rent two reclining beds and an umbrella for a day costs around 20 up to 30 euro in any place.

Rent a car in Sicily
To rent a car costs around 100 euro per day including every insurance.
We heard that it costs 300 euro to rent a car from Palermo airport for a week but we couldn’t find the shop with the price.

Japanese people in Sicily
I didn’t see Asian people in Sicily.
Less people from Japan travel abroad these days due to COVID-19 situation so it makes sense.
Generally, many Japanese people like traveling to Italy.

Traffic in Sicily
To drive safely and carefully in Sicily are important.
We saw a car crash twice during a trip in Sicily.
Especially in the city, some roads are not proper, e.g. it is not obvious how many lanes and many cars just drive whatever.
Some cars are blinking the whole time for some reason.
It was very confusing for me.
One crazy thing for me in Sicily was parking.
People in Sicily park a car very close.
Between car and car, there was almost no space!

Overall, I enjoyed my vacation in Sicily for a week.
I have been to Rome, Florence, Sardinia and Sicily island in Italy.
Every place has its own colors and it is not the same.
Although some buildings are old and cute, additionally food is tasty at any places in Italy in general.
