Sushi is a very popular traditional Japanese food.
Many Japanese people like Sushi.

When I was a child, I was not big fan of fish in general but I have liked Tuna.
Even if you don’t like some kinds of fish, you might be able to find a favorite fresh Sushi in Japan.
Because there are many kinds of fresh Sushi in Japan.

In Germany, there are many Asian restaurants that serve Sushi.
Those restaurants are mostly owned by Vietnamese or Thai.
There are not so many Japanese restaurants in Germany compared to Vietnamese.
But I think many people in Germany enjoy eating Sushi as well as Japanese people in Japan.

I had some Sushi at Asian restaurant (not Japanese) but It was not so bad.
Normally, there are not so many kinds of fish for Sushi in Germany.
I felt that there are many salmon Sushi on a menu in Germany.

Sushi in Japan is the best.
Because there are many kinds of fresh fish.
I really miss Sushi in Japan.

There are a lot of ways to eat tasty Sushi in Japan as below.

-Supermarket
-Convenience store
-Sushi delivery shop
-Sushi take out shop
-Sushi restaurant
-Make Sushi by yourself

Sushi is easy to share and eat.
That’s why I guess that we often eat Sushi when family gathers or celebrates in Japan.
I remember that I used to go to Sushi restaurant with Grandfather, Grandmother, my sister and my brother at least once a month when I was a child.

Also, My family used to go to “Kanekichi” to take Sushi away quite often.
I like take out Sushi “Kanekichi” which is a local Sushi take out shop.

In Germany, I was asked some times if I cook/make Sushi?
The answer for me is “It depends on what kind of Sushi.”

Basically, I guess that a lot of people think Sushi = Nigiri Sushi or Gunkan Maki Sushi.
Sushi has many kinds of styles.
I am just Japanese and I am no expert of Sushi but I even know some kinds of Sushi style.

Let’s check it out.

1.Nigiri Sushi and Gunkan Maki Sushi

Sushi restaurant in Japan

Nigiri Sushi is a typical style of Sushi.
Any kind of fish could be on the top of a formed rice.
That’s Nigiri Sushi.
Nigiri means “gripping” and Nigiri Sushi is made by hand.

Gunkan Maki Sushi is also typical style of Sushi as well as Nigiri Sushi.
Gunkan Maki Sushi is rice on the bottom and fish on the top and Nori seaweed is around them covered.
Gunkan means “warship” because it looks like a warship.

For me, Nigiri Sushi and Gunkan Maki Sushi are not homemade food.
It is possible to make Nigiri Sushi and Gunkan Maki Sushi by yourself but I have never tried making it.
Going to Sushi restaurants, taking out, buying at supermarkets or convenience shops is what most Japanese people do to eat Nigiri Sushi/Gunkan Maki Sushi.
Sushi prices are totally up to the restaurant.
One Nigiri Sushi or Gunkan Maki Sushi is around 50 to 2000 yen.

One plate which has two Nigiri Sushi or Gunkan Maki Sushi is 110 yen here.

Total is around ten or 12 Nigiri Sushi and Gunkan Maki Sushi plus Chawanmushi which is an egg custard dish contains sea food.
My sister said that it costs around 7000 yen that means one Nigiri Sushi or Gunkan Maki Sushi should be around 700 yen.
One Nigiri Sushi/Gunkan Maki Sushi for 700 yen sounds a little bit expensive for me but it must be tasty.
It would be nice if you eat it on special day.

I heard that there is very expensive Sushi restaurant called “Kyubei” in Tokyo.

Kyubey Co., Ltd.
*It is an expensive Sushi restaurant

I have never been there but 100 yen Sushi restaurants is okay quality to eat for me.

By the way, Sashimi is the same as Nigiri Sushi but it’s without rice.

2.Maki Sushi (Sushi rolls)

Futo Maki Sushi
Futo Maki Sushi & Hoso Maki Sushi

It is not so hard to make Maki Sushi at home.
My mother made Maki Sushi a long time ago when I was a child as far as I remember.

Maki Sushi is made by wrapping vinegar rice and ingredients with nori seaweed.
You make Maki Sushi like a making roll cake.
Maki Sushi’s ingredients could be as below.

-Cucumber
-Atsuyakitamago (Japanese style of fried eggs)
-Kanpyo (made by peeling the fruit of Yugao into a string and drying it)
-Maguro (Tuna)/Salmon/Ikura (salmon roe) etc.

There are Hoso Maki Sushi which is thin and Futo Maki Sushi which is thick.
My favorite Maki Sushi is Salad Maki Sushi which has salad and tuna flakes.
Korean food “Gimbap” is very similar to Japanese Maki Sushi.

One of my friend made Maki Sushi and pictures are from her.

3.Inari Sushi

Inari Sushi (Inarizushi)

Inari Sushi is made by vinegar rice and fried tofu with sweet and soy sauce taste.

The origin of Inari Sushi came from Toyokawa Inari’s Monzen town, Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

My grandfather liked Inari Sushi.
I think Inari Sushi is popular by old people and children.
Inari Sushi tastes sweet in my opinion.

I don’t know exactly how to cook Inari Sushi but there are some recipes on google.
So I would say that it is possible to make Inari Sushi.
But I think Inari Sushi is not for daily cooking.

4.Chirashi Sushi

Chirashi Sushi

Chirashi Sushi means scattered Sushi.
The ingredients of Chirashi Sushi are mixed in and topped on sushi rice.

Chirashi Sushi’s topping could be as below.

-Boiled shrimp
-Carrot
-Shiitake mushroom
-Snow pea
-lotus root (Renkon)

Sometimes, my mother cooks Chirashi Sushi.
There are Chirashi Sushi set products that you can buy at supermarket to make Chirashi Sushi easily.
Without Chirashi Sushi set, It is still possible to make it.

I think I have made Chirashi Sushi before.
To make Chirashi Sushi is not so hard and it looks gorgeous.
Therefore Chirashi Sushi is good to make when you celebrate or people gather.

You can enjoy talking with your family or friends while making Temaki Sushi.

How wonderful meal Temaki Sushi is.

My friend family held Temaki Sushi party as the pictures.

There are more kinds of Sushi styles.

In my experience, I would say I can make No.4 Chirashi Sushi and No.5 Temaki Sushi at home.

Here is my recommendation when you eat Sushi in Japan.

1.Nigiri Sushi and Gunkan Maki Sushi *Restaurant
2.Maki Sushi (Sushi rolls) *Take out
3.Inari Sushi *Take out
4.Chirashi Sushi *Homemade
5.Temaki Sushi *Homemade

It is possible to buy Sushi rice and seaweed at supermarket in Germany
but If you can not arrange fresh seafood, you might feel something is missing.

There are many attractive seafood ingredients in Japan.
Therefore homemade Sushi should be tasty in Japan.

Anyway, I would like to say that Sushi has many kinds of styles in Japan.
