Jagaimo in Japanese means potate so Jaga is coming from Jagaimo I guess.
Nikujaga is popular for men and women of all ages in Japan.
When I was a child, I was not much of Japanese taste which is soy based but after around 22 years old,
I was getting to like it naturally.
My German boyfriend was not much of Japanese taste but now, he is getting used to soy based taste.
In Japan, many people eat Nikujaga at home.
I have never had Nikujaga at restaurant.
I might have had bought bento box contained Nikujaga.
In conclusion, Nikujaga is typical Japanese home cooking.
When I image Nikujaga, the words “home”, “Japanese”, “warm”, “kind” are coming up in my mind.
In my opinion, if you say that you are good at cooking Nikujaga, your impression makes nice.
Here is the recipe how to cook Japanese home cooking Nikujaga.
For 3 portions
Ingredients
a.Dashi (Asian supermarket) 5g
b.Mirin (Asian supermarket) 20ml
c.Soy sauce (Asian supermarket) 5ml
d.Potato (supermarket) 6-7
e.Carrot (supermarket) 2
f.Onion (supermarket) 2
g.Beans (supermarket) 100g
h.Thin sliced beef (Meat shop at EDEKA) 300g
i.Water 200ml
j.Salt and pepper
How to cook Nikujaga
1.Cut the vegetables d-f
2.Fry the meat with a little oil in pot or pan.
3.Add the vegetables d-f and fry a bit
4.Put water and a-c
5.Add Beans
5.Put a lid and make them cooked for 10 mins
6.let them boiled and cooked for around 10 mins
7.Taste and if the taste is missing, put sail, papper or a-c.
If it is too thick taste, add water.
You can also use chicken or pork instead of beef if you want.
There must exist more proper professional recipes to cook Nikujaga than my recipe of Nikujaga.
But my Nikujaga recipe is easy and it is tasty enough.
You can buy soy sauce at EDEKA, and Asian supermarket.
A one of famous soy sauce brand is Kikkoman.
I got a ingredient Mirin from Japan.
Mirin is kind of rice wine and it tastes sweet.
When you use Mirin to cook Nikujaga, you do not need sugar because Mirin is enough sweet.
The combination of Mirin and soy sauce is typical Japanese food taste and it amazingly matches.
Therefor I would say Nikujaga is the one of popular Japanese home cooking many Japanese love.
There are enough carbohydrate from potatoes in Nikujaga but normally Japanese eat rice with Nikujaga.
